Paws for the Cause

Karma says: Spaying and neutering saves lives!

About Paws for the Cause

Paws for the Cause seeks to decrease the number of unwanted pets on the Lake Traverse Reservation, in the Sisseton, SD area.  We do this by:

  • Moving unwanted animals to other rescues for placement
  • Helping injured animals in need of immediate veterinary attention
  • Providing educational information on animal care and the importance of spaying and neutering
  • Providing low cost spays and neuters to the reservation community

These guys are very skinny.  They are on the verge of being starved. Their water is filthy. Rocky's water had green slime in it!  They are all very nice, friendly dogs. We had to beg to buy us a couple days to try to find rescue.  This is an emergency.  These dogs will die very soon if they do not have rescue.  Please don't let them die. Contract Kitra if you can help.  Every life counts!

UPDATE: 2 of these black and white guys are still alive and are about a year old.  They are black lab/german shorthair mixes.  The other two and their mom didn't make it.  PLEASE HELP THESE TWO BEFORE THEY END UP WITH THE SAME FATE.

There are also 9 more black lab mix puppies around 8.5 weeks old.  Please let Kitra know if you can take any these guys.

If you can help with any of these animals....

Stray Round Up

We are working with the tribe to coordinate a round up of the stray dogs in the area.  We are hoping to pull them all to safety.  We need rescues to step up and volunteer to take dogs.  At this point, we are in the planning stages and don't know when it will happen, or how many dogs we will get.  If you can help with transport or are a rescue that can take dogs, please contact Kitra.  See the "Requirements for Rescue" page if you have not helped us before.  More info to follow.

"Baggage" by Charlene Gruber

BAGGAGE

Yes I come with baggage,
Sitting here in this cell
Yes I come with baggage,
Oh surely they can tell.

Maybe I was so loved
A pet that just lost his way
Maybe I never knew a home
They say “Just a plain old stray”
Or maybe I was dumped, through no fault of my own
Never again to see, the place I once called home.

Yes I come with baggage,
But then again, so would you
Taken from everything
The only things you ever knew.

Take me home and I can guarantee
I won’t be the perfect pet,
I  may not sit, or lay, or stay,
And yes, I may scratch the vet.

Scratch the furniture, chew a hole
Even jump a fence
It’s not that I don’t want to please you
I just haven’t learned how to yet.

Just give me some time, some love and attention
I beg for a moment or two
Look through these bars and through all of my scars
That’s all I’ll ever ask of you.

They walk past me once,
Give me a glance
All I’m asking for
Is for one more chance.

Yes I come with baggage
But then again so do you
The difference between us, as I study your scars
Is I would never give up on you.

-Written by the wonderful Charlene Gruber, this poem was inspired in part by one of the Paws for the Cause dogs. Charlene is one of our rescue's biggest supporters, and I just love this poem...
